Tonight Lynne Sachs and Mark Street
return to Monkey Town with CITY SALVAGE the second installment
of the XY Chromosome project, a mixed up, tattered feast for the
eyes, ears and mind that considers the city, real and imagined
as subject. We've invited the preternatural pranksters Bosko
Blagojevic and Zach Poff to join the
mix by contributing audio to our urban stew.
We find the activity of wandering and shooting immensely inspiring:
the city offers endless possibilities, surprises and contradictions.
How to recreate this lovely and aimless peregrination for the
quadra-screen?
Tonight’s show will contrast images and sounds in a kinetic,
charged way. It will be a study of dissonance: abstract material
brushed up against the discernible, frenetic versus the more languid,
chaotic sound vs. silence, architecture vs. the human element.
Our four screen, omni channel show embodies these counterpoints,
and is fragmented and jarring like the experience of first walking
through a new city.
Zach Poff and Bosko Blagojevic
contribute with a live, site-specific audio performance, structured
around Italo Calvino's 1972 novel INVISIBLE CITIES. The artists
use consumer radios, reel-to-reel tape decks, cassette tapes,
midi devices, compact discs, AM transmission, minidisc players,
and digital sound sources to create acoustic-discursive webs of
meaning and explore the layers of contemporary urban experience.
"Are we there yet? Where am I?" you might ask. We invite
you to drift away with us, be a floozy flaneur, starting out in
Williamsburg and journeying deep inside your psyche. No travel
restrictions apply, and bring as much hand lotion as you'd like.
4 artists! 4 screens! 10 cities! 70 minutes! 2 performances! Over
1000 images and 750 sounds! 1 night only.
