The 90s, and the early 90s in particular, display the music video
medium at its most Mannerist. After the innovation of the 80s
-- Madonna, Michael
Jackson, "Sledgehammer," etc--the newer groups began
splitting off into
various thematic groups: rap's realism (prefiguring its current
fantasy
obsession), indie's lo-fi techniques, mega-stars' huge budgets
and
overstuffed treacle, and Britpop's cool sheen. These were best
viewed during the summer back when MTV and VH1 showed videos during
the day, meshing Biggie's James Bond moment, Nirvana's Ed Sulllivan
moment, and Tupac's The Warriors moment into a common, shared
experience. There's not a lot of nostalgia here, but it's been
long enough--don't look back in anger.
